Balikbayan box courier rates compared: US → Philippines
Courier box prices from the US change often and vary by origin state and Philippine destination region, so a single figure goes stale fast. What each US → Philippines courier publishes on its own page — box tiers, transit windows, and whether the rate comes from a calculator or a written quote — holds up better, and the customs ceiling that sits over all of it is fixed and sourced. Here is what each courier posts, then the lines to quote, then that ceiling.
| Courier | How its rate is set | Posted transit, to Metro Manila | Box tiers it posts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manila Forwarder | On-site shipping calculator; air cut-off Thursdays | Ocean "30-45 days"; air "3-7 days" | Regular and Jumbo |
| Johnny Air Cargo | Rate page, but "vary depending on the size and content … as well as the destination" | Air "5 to 7 business days from flight date" (flights Mon–Fri) | Air cargo only; priced per package, no set tiers |
| Forex eShip | On-site calculator | Shown only inside the site calculator — no fixed figure on the page | Balikbayan, PackyPack and Pinaship boxes; Regular 24×17×20 in, Jumbo 24×17×25 in |
| LBC USA (sea freight) | Sea-cargo calculator | Not posted; LBC publishes only the PH final-mile delivery windows after the box lands | Small 24×18×9, Large 23×17×20, Large 28×18×17, Extra Large 24×18×24 in |
| Atlas Shippers | By quote — "each location offers differing rates and delivery times" | By quote | Posts tier dimensions (Macho, Regular, Jr, Travel) |
Most of these rates are not a board you can read off. Four of the five couriers above compute the box price in a calculator keyed to the origin state and the destination region, or quote it per location, so two senders shipping the identical box from different states can see different figures. Only Manila Forwarder posts both a sea and an air transit window, and Johnny Air Cargo posts an air window; the rest give transit with the quote. The rate for a specific box is therefore the written quote for that box, on that route. The comparison that holds is the same box, quoted on 2–3 couriers the same day. Quote your own box using the same dimensions, then compare these lines:
| Cost line | What to ask the courier | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Box size tier | Price for the exact box (e.g. small / medium / large / jumbo) by their dimensions | Couriers price by box tier, not by exact weight, for standard sea freight |
| Origin coverage | Pickup vs drop-off, and whether your state/city has a surcharge | Door-to-door pricing differs by region |
| Destination region | Metro Manila vs provincial vs island delivery fee | Provincial delivery often costs more and takes longer |
| Sea vs air | Sea (weeks, cheapest) vs air (days, far costlier) | Most balikbayan boxes go by sea |
| Transit time | Posted door-to-door estimate, in writing | Compare ranges, not best-case |
| Insurance / coverage | Whether contents are covered and the declared-value cap | Ask whether cash is covered at all. Separately, the Bureau of Customs lists currencies, checks, money orders and traveller’s checks as not allowed in a balikbayan box (client.customs.gov.ph FAQ id=40, checked 2026-08-30) |
The duty-free ceiling is the sourced part of this page, and it is annual rather than per box: it runs on the sender’s calendar year, whichever courier carries the boxes. Two caps sit over that year, and a shipment has to stay inside both:
| Rule | Posted term | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Value ceiling | Total FCA value for all balikbayan boxes per sender in any calendar year must not exceed ₱150,000 | CAO 01-2018 §4.2 |
| Times per year | Privilege may be availed up to three (3) times in a calendar year | CAO 01-2018 §4.1 |
| What counts as one availment | Boxes in one consolidated shipment covered by one master bill of lading or master air waybill count as one availment | CAO 01-2018 §4.6 |
| De minimis interaction | A shipment above the ₱10,000 de minimis value is automatically one availment | CAO 01-2018 §4.1 |
| Excess value | Any amount in excess of the allowable non-dutiable and non-taxable value is subject to the applicable duties and taxes | CAO 01-2018 §3.1 |
Read it as a yearly budget for the sender rather than an allowance that resets with every box. Three boxes at ₱60,000 each come to ₱180,000 of FCA value in the same calendar year, which is past the ₱150,000 ceiling even though no single box is anywhere near it. The two caps also bind independently, so a sender can run out of value before running out of availments, or the reverse. The exclusions that follow from both are set out on what you can and can’t pack.
What actually drives the price
“Cheapest” has no single answer because the number is assembled, not quoted off a board. Four lines build it, and they move independently:
- Box tier. Standard sea freight is priced by the courier’s box tier, not by exact weight, which is why two senders shipping different weights in the same tier often pay the same freight. The posted tier dimensions each courier quotes against are set out on box weight & size limits by courier.
- Origin coverage. Pickup versus drop-off, and whether the sender’s state or city carries a surcharge, changes the door-to-door figure before the box even ships.
- Destination region. Metro Manila, a province, and an island are three different delivery costs and three different transit windows for the identical box. LBC is the one courier above that posts the Philippine final-mile windows; the rest fold them into the quote.
- Sea vs air. Sea is weeks and the cheapest; air is days and far costlier. Most balikbayan boxes go by sea, and the two are not comparable as a single “rate” — the trade-off is set out on sea vs air vs door-to-door.
Whether cash is covered by a courier’s insurance is a question only the courier can answer, in writing, for the policy being bought. Packing it is a separate question with a published answer: the Bureau of Customs lists currencies, checks, money orders and traveller’s checks as not allowed in a balikbayan box (client.customs.gov.ph FAQ id=40, checked 2026-08-30). That list is BOC guidance to senders on contents, not a courier coverage term, so neither question answers the other.
How to read this
“Cheapest” depends on the origin state, the recipient’s region, and the box tier, which is why the answer is a method, not a fixed table: same box, same day, 2–3 written quotes, compare the lines above, and order the results by total door-to-door cost rather than headline box price. The posted terms in the first table are each courier’s own, checked 2026-09-06; the freight figure for your box is still the written quote for that box. The only fixed, sourced money figure is the Bureau of Customs annual value ceiling, kept current at least quarterly.

Questions, answered
- What is the cheapest balikbayan box courier from the US to the Philippines?
- There is no single cheapest courier, because the price is built from the box tier, the US origin state, the Philippine destination region, and sea versus air, so the same box can differ between two senders in different states. Most US couriers do not post a rate board at all: Manila Forwarder, LBC's US sea-freight service, and Forex eShip compute the box price in a calculator keyed to origin and destination, and Atlas Shippers quotes rates per location (each courier's own page, checked 2026-09-06). The durable comparison is a method — the same box, quoted on 2–3 couriers the same day, ordered by total door-to-door cost.
- How long does a balikbayan box take from the US to the Philippines?
- Transit is a range to a named region, not a single figure. On its own shipment page (checked 2026-09-06), Manila Forwarder posts ocean cargo at "30-45 days" and air cargo at "3-7 days" to Metro Manila, and notes shipments are "subject to delays due to … random government inspections." Johnny Air Cargo posts air cargo at "5 to 7 business days from flight date," with flights Monday to Friday (its FAQ, checked 2026-09-06). Provincial and island delivery adds a tail after the box clears customs. The full stage-by-stage window is on how long a balikbayan box takes.
- Do US balikbayan box couriers post their shipping rates online?
- Most do not post a fixed rate. As of 2026-09-06, Manila Forwarder and LBC's US sea-freight service compute the box price in an on-site calculator, Forex eShip prices through its own calculator, and Atlas Shippers states that "each location offers differing rates and delivery times" and quotes per location (each courier's own page). Johnny Air Cargo publishes a rate page but notes rates "vary depending on the size and content of the package as well as the destination." So the rate for a specific box is the written quote from that courier for that box, on that route.
- How much can I send in a balikbayan box from the US without customs duty?
- The duty- and tax-free ceiling is annual, not per box: the total FCA value of all balikbayan boxes from one sender in a calendar year must not exceed ₱150,000, and the privilege may be availed up to three times a year — the two caps bind independently (Bureau of Customs, CAO 01-2018 §4.1–4.2, checked 2026-08-30). Any amount above the allowable non-dutiable, non-taxable value is subject to the applicable duties and taxes (§3.1). The ceiling is the same whichever US courier carries the boxes; only the freight changes.
